Rifle 101

AKA 'First Rounds - Rifle Edition'

$ 150-200

  1. Course Description:

Rifle 101 / First Rounds (Rifle Edition) is the first class in our “Rifle Series”.  This is what we call the “exposure” class. This class is a quick introduction into rifles and is for those with little to no experience.

This class can also be known as “Intro into Rifles” and “Rifle Basics”.

This class is approximately 2-3 hours at the range. Most beginner rifle classes (with other instructors) can be as long as 4-8 hours. In our experience, most students become overwhelmed with how long the class is. Most are nervous about the shooting portion. Our goal is to spend as much time as possible working on the shooting fundamentals, rifle manipulation, dry-firing, and actually shooting. We feel like most students are done/tired/checked out after 2-3 hours.

Rifles, ammunition, clear safety glasses, and electronic ear muffs are provided in this class. Students may bring their own rifles and ammunition. In fact, we encourage they do!

  • Rifles: Ruger 10-22, Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22, and standard AR-15
  •  Ammunition: 30 rounds of 22lr and 20 rounds of 223/556
    • Our standard AR-15 has a 5.56 barrel, so it accepts either 223 or 556 ammunition

(Note: students do not have to shoot our rifles or ammunition, but we will not refund you the price difference. The rifles and ammunition is factored into the price).

Topics covered:

  • Universal firearm safety rules
  • Firearm ownership responsibilities
  • Types of rifles and their actions
  • Common types of rifle ammunition
  • How to identify ammunition
  • Firearm and ammunition storage
  • Introduction to the shooting fundamentals
    • Eye dominance, grip, stance/posture, breathing control, trigger control, sight alignment/picture, and follow through
  • Learn how to load and unload firearms and magazines
  • Manipulations of a rifle
  • Shoot from both the benchrest and standing position
  • Three common types of malfunctions
  • Definition of “dry fire” and how to do it
  • How to transport, case, and uncase your firearm(s)

Course Length: 2 – 3 hours at the range.

Prerequisites:

  • Student must be over the age of 18. (Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian).

Rifle Clinic

$ 90-140

Course Description:

We call this the “practice clinic”. Our Rifle Clinic is meant to be taken multiple times. The purpose of this clinic is to provide students with an opportunity to practice with their peers and instructors. Students are encouraged to utilize the clinic to:

  • Figure out what rifle is best for them.
    • Optional: we can review pistol caliber carbines (PCC) in this class. We do not cover PCCs in our Rifle 101 class.
  • Figure out possible gear placement.
  • Continue practicing to become safe and component with their:
    • Firearm handling abilities.
    • Operating their weapon system.
    • Shooting fundamentals.
  • Complete the learning objectives needed to take Rifle 103.

Students are encouraged to bring their own rifle(s). We offer rifle rental packages (ammunition is included). Students are not permitted to use their own ammunition in our rentals. Rifle rentals are only available to established students. If you are a new student, please take Rifle 101 or a private lesson first, unless we have met you and made an exception.

Students will receive 1:1 instruction*. Instruction will be individualized based on the student’s goals, the highest class the student has taken, and our prior experience(s) with the student.

Our maximum ratio is 1 instructor to 2 students. Students will alternate turns; the first student will shoot during the first 15-minutes of live fire, the second student will shoot during the second 15-minutes of live fire, and then it will revert back to the first student.

Students are eligible to attend this clinic after completing Rifle 101, or if they’ve been exempted. Students may take this clinic again after attending Rifle 102 and 103.

*Note: Instruction will not surpass the information taught in the highest class the student has taken or been exempt from. For example, we will not provide instruction to a student who’s highest class is Rifle 101 and wants to learn how to shoot around barricades or transition to a secondary weapon. We will ask the student to either take the classes leading up to the class that teaches that information, or schedule private lesson(s).

  • Sight over bore
  • Prone and sitting positions

Students will not receive a “successfully completed” certificate unless they demonstrate they are safe and competent in their gun handling abilities and shooting fundamentals.

We encourage students to take the rifle clinic to work on the skills needed to pass 102 before proceeding to 103. Students do not have to retake 102 to receive a “successfully completed” certificate.
