Tucson Mountain Park (TMP) is a public range operated by Pima County. You will have other people shooting next to you, so it can get loud.
Marana Shooting Club (MSC) is a private range, available to its club members on select days each month. There is one large rifle bay and four smaller pistol bays. We usually reserve a pistol bay for handgun classes, so it is more private than TMP. There may be other shooters in the other bays, but it is usually more quiet than TMP.
MSC is usually better for students who are very nervous. Most students will be nervous and jumpy when they hear gun fire. This is a common issue shooters have to work through and get accustomed to. For students who know they are very anxious and nervous, MSC or doing an in-home private lesson before going to the range, may be the better option. Students are able to familiarize themselves with the universal firearm safety rules, parts and actions of a firearm, and how to safely hold and perform all of the manipulations of a firearm, during an in-home lesson. Most students’ fear is doing something unsafe with a firearm, so an in-home lesson helps reduce their anxiety and fear.
There is a price difference for classes held at TMP vs MSC. There is a large difference in the amount of supplies and labor involved in hosting a class at MSC compared to TMP. For MSC, we have to set up and tear down, and load and unload our vehicles with supplies we wouldn’t have to bring if we went to TMP. Supplies include tables, chairs, target stands, target supplies (like wood sticks and cardboard), and canopies.
